In each industry, it’s our job as professionals to teach the next generation. KTM’s leadership team has believed that from day one, and we’ve found that in a technical field like mechanical engineering, one of the best ways we can contribute is by offering student internships.
What does an internship look like?
Internship formats vary depending on the industry and the business. We offer two internship tracks: one for high-school students and one typically for college students. Each student completes a training curriculum we’ve developed in order to gain experience with design software and the mathematical skills that go into engineering.
Throughout the program, students get to interact with engineers (PE’s) and technical designers and ask questions along the way. Toward the end of the program, students give a presentation for KTM engineering staff. This process, developing a design from initial steps through final presentation, allows students to find out for themselves what it would be like to work as an engineer.
That’s our real goal: to give students the experience and information they need to see if engineering is a career they’d like to pursue and to give them a solid foundation in the technical skills they’ll need if that’s the path they choose.
How an internship can help
If you’re interested in a field but aren’t sure that’s what you want to pursue as a career, an internship is a great way to try the career on for size. If you decide that industry isn’t for you, you’ve made some connections and gained some work experience, as well as some knowledge that might help you decide what to do in the future.
If you try it and love it, you’ve gotten invaluable hands-on experience, a jump-start on what you can only learn outside the classroom.
Internships at KTM Solutions
Do you like puzzles? Creative problem-solving? Mechanical engineering is all about using math and physics to find technical solutions to real-world problems. If you’re curious about how things work and interested in making them work better, give engineering a try!
At KTM, we’ve been offering internships since 2006. Out of the roughly 40 students to come through the program, about 80% have gone on to become engineers—and several work right here in our office.
