Manufacturing in South Carolina
Without manufacturing services, engineering designs would live only on paper. So as active members of the upstate engineering and manufacturing communities, we’re excited that South Carolina is drawing attention to the importance of manufacturing in our state.
Recently, SC Governor Henry McMaster signed a proclamation officially recognizing October 1, 2021, as National Manufacturing Day and October 2021 as South Carolina Manufacturing Month.
Economic Impact
South Carolina has long been a hub for the aerospace and automotive industries (including related industries, such as tires).
Recently, SC Governor Henry McMaster signed a proclamation officially recognizing October 1, 2021, as National Manufacturing Day and October 2021 as South Carolina Manufacturing Month.
In fact, a report put out by South Carolina Future Makers, a branch of the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance, examined the economic impact of the manufacturing industry in South Carolina. This report, prepared in March of 2021 in conjunction with the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, found that
Manufacturing accounts for 16% of the state’s GDP and 38% of the state’s general fund;
Every 10 manufacturing jobs created in SC leads to 14 jobs created elsewhere in SC;
30% of the state’s jobs are tied to the manufacturing industry;
In SC, wages for manufacturing jobs are on average 33% higher than the average annual wage.
Our Part
We proud to celebrate the manufacturing industry along with the National Association of Manufacturers, the state of South Carolina, the SC Manufacturers Alliance, and South Carolina Manufacturing magazine.
We’re also happy to contribute to STEM education in SC through our internship programs and our engineers’ board memberships and volunteer work. The engineering and manufacturing industries, in addition to serving a vital role in our local economy, provide opportunities for profitable and rewarding careers to students and professionals who enjoy creativity and problem solving.
We all rely on the work manufacturers do—join us this month in appreciating them!
